Daishogokuji Temple is an ancient temple in Takasaki that has celebrated its 800th anniversary. It has a connection with Lady Keishoin, the mother of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the fifth Shogun, and the Five Great Wisdom Kings and Thirty-Six Child Attendants (currently undergoing restoration) donated by her are enshrined in the main hall.

As its name suggests, Daishogokuji Temple has a deep connection with Gokokuji Temple in Tokyo. In the Edo period, the 24th head priest of Daishogokuji Temple, Ryoken Shojo, was invited by Lady Keishoin to establish a temple, which is now the current Gokokuji Temple in Otowa.

As is widely known, Gokokuji Temple in Otowa has hosted many large tea ceremonies. From dedication ceremonies by grand masters of various schools to large-scale tea gatherings attended by hundreds of people in a single day, it is a very familiar temple to anyone who has studied the tea ceremony. It also has many tea rooms and is known nationwide as the most splendid venue for tea ceremonies in the East.

In connection with its relationship to Gokokuji Temple in Otowa, this Daishogokuji Temple also established a dry landscape garden named "Keishoin" and a tea room.

It was built with the chief priest's wish that visitors could enjoy tea and experience the culture and history of Takasaki while appreciating its charm.

Once the pandemic subsides, the goal is for various tea ceremonies to be held here, just like at Gokokuji Temple in Tokyo, making it a new hub for cultural dissemination. Please feel free to visit.
